The new BMW S 1000 XR is a direct rival for Ducati Multistrada. He even shares the same color. The engine and another chassis components come straight from S 1000 R, the supernaked presented last year.
BMW S 1000 XR is powered by the inline four 1.000 cc engine already found on S 1000 R. In is an S 1000 RR detuned engine which makes 160 hp and better torque at low and middle revs for a better street performance. The torque is 112 NM @ 9.250 rpm, while the wet weight is 228 kg. The fuel capacity is 20 liters.
BMW S 1000 XR has, as standard equipment, two riding modes: rain & road. The traction control is also available on any bike and, optionally, you can choose a pro package which gives you accces to Dynamic and Dynamic Pro riding modes. They would work alongside the Dynamic Traction Control and ABS Pro which gives you stability at corner braking.
It has an aluminium frame, same as S 1000 R with the engine a stressed member. The fork is USD and the suspension system can be controlled through Dyamic ESA.
With S 1000 XR, BMW Motorrad is attacking a new market segment, in which we can find motorcycles like Ducati Multistrada, Aprilia Caponord or Kawasaki Versys 1000. But the main rival is Ducati Multistrada. They have the same power (160 hp), but Ducati is has a better torque: 136 Nm vs. 112 Nm. They also have about the same weight, but the BMW should be cheaper.
We don’t have the price yet, but it will cost around 15.000-16.000 eur (18.000 – 19.000$) in Europe.
